Professional Theatre and Communications Training
Professional Theatre and Communications Training
The American Studio's foundation is firmly rooted in, but not solely reliant upon, the principles of American Method Acting (Lee Strasberg & The Actor’s Studio) and the training techniques of the Society of American Fight Directors. These techniques, not currently taught in Finland by any systematic study of Acting, have withstood the test of time and scrutiny in the United States and proved to be foundational for many successful Hollywood Actors.
Our methods of instruction both reinforce and expound upon these techniques which demystify the actor’s process and cultivate creative discovery through action. Through this approach, the actor is freed from the bonds of mental and emotional slavery through the immediacy of physically living the moment.
The American Studio proudly continues the American tradition of professional actor training by exclusively teaching Lee Strasberg’s American Method Acting from a practical perspective. Whether you are a new actor or a career stage veteran, you can now explore new depths of creativity while taking your performances to new heights.
Through our intensive Stage Combat courses, students become proficient in establishing character physicality and the devising of fighting styles grounded in their discoveries. Exhaustive attention is paid to character development, dramatic storytelling and the implementation of physical choices from which violence erupts.
As the former Casting Director for the Tony Award-winning San Diego Repertory Theatre, Stephen Morgan-MacKay has auditioned hundreds of actors. Perfectly suited for both amateur and professional alike, Audition Techniques is designed to assist you in obtaining not only a callback but, more importantly, the role itself.
Dynamic Public Speaking is designed to bridge the gap between simply communicating and communicating effectively and confidently in a public forum before an English speaking audience through the implementation of communication techniques employed by professional actors in the mediums of Theatre, Film and Television. Once adopted, these techniques provide the communicator with a vast array of tools which enhance clear communication, instill self-confidence and develop strong speaker credibility.
Like it or not, we are all negotiators. We discuss raises with our boss, collaborate with colleagues and barter with our children. This process of positional give-and-take has often left negotiators feeling anxious and pressured at the expense of their needs being met. But there is another way.
The method of Principled Negotiation, developed at the Harvard Negotiation Project, decides issues based on merits and interests rather than positions. It enables you to be fair while protecting you against those who would take advantage of your fairness.
Throughout history, all of the truly great leaders and innovators have communicated in exactly the same way. And it is completely opposite from the rest of us. Good leaders merely manage, but great leaders inspire.
The Art of Leadership explores these life-changing principles of communication adopted by such people as John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Apple Co-Founder, Steve Jobs. This intensive, thought-provoking course will leave you feeling challenged, invigorated and altogether inspired both personally and professionally.

As an art form, stage combat has evolved well beyond the long-established norms instituted during the “Golden Age” of Hollywood. Stock moves and unimaginative fight sequences have been eclipsed in the shadow of the professional Fight Director; whose essential position within the performing arts has paved the way for specialization in representational violence.
Today, many Fight Directors have abandoned these former presentational styles which have sacrificed substance for mundane spectacle and have adopted a professional, systematic study of physical violence within a historical context which is then implemented into scenes of theatrical violence. The results are fight scenes filled with purpose, intent, motivation and realistic representation that are thoroughly grounded in and supported by the dramatic arc of the text.
It is in this manner that the American Studio provides services in professional Fight Direction and Stage Combat Choreography for theatre, television and film productions. From contemporary unarmed choreography to period historical fighting styles, we integrate dominant actor training techniques endorsed by professional theatres and the television and film industries in the United States. Our organic approach to stage combat is fully centered in the dramatic text and the individual character work of the actor and includes the adoption of all individual physical strengths and weaknesses.
